Where can I legally ride an electric scooter in Tauranga?You can ride an electric scooter on footpaths, roadways and shared paths. Electric scooters with seats, like the ones here, can be ridden on cycle lanes and roads.
When you're riding on the footpath you need to,
- be considerate of pedestrians and take care to not put them at any risk.
- give way for pedestrians and those using mobility devices.
- ride as per the speed limit- see limits on speed for e-scooters.

Do electric scooters need to be registered?No - If your electric scooter wheels do not exceed 355mm and the motor has a maximum power output not exceeding 300W, it’s considered by the NZ government as a low-powered vehicle. This means you can use it without registration.
Can I ride an electric scooter without a license?Yes - if your scooter doesn’t have wheels exceeding 355mm and a motor exceeding 300W maximum power output, you don't need to have a license to ride it.
Do I need to wear a helmet on a scooter?
The short answer is no. According to the Tauranga City Council, it is not a legal requirement to wear a helmet when you ride an electric scooter, but it is highly recommended you wear one for your safety.

How fast can I go on an e-scooter?According to the Tauranga City Council, e-scooter top speed should be reduced to 15km/h when riding within the city centre, Mount Maunganui and Greerton Village.

Where Can You Ride E-Scooters In Tauranga?Other than the city centre there are lots of places to take your e-scooter for a ride in Tauranga. Let’s start with some of the best parks around here.
Riding E-Scooters at Parks in Tauranga
The city's premier park, Memorial Park, has plenty of nice, clear trails including the stunning 500m waterfront path.
Huharua Harbour Park
Located at the end of Plummers Point Road in Te Puna, the park features a path that winds along the estuary and the beach.
You'll find this stunning park at the northern end of The Strand, located on a hill above the railway line. Enjoy views of the Port of Tauranga and Mauao while you scoot around here.

Take your scooter for a ride at these popular cycle trails.
Designed for scooters, walkers and cyclists the inner-city track along the Waikareao estuary offers beautiful views of Motuopae Island.
One of the biggest reserves in Tauranga, the track in Kopurererua Valley, a.k.a ‘K Valley’, features a track where you can scoot through native bush and farmland.
Scoot the loop around Pāpāmoa where you can ride along the beach and the stormwater reserves. The Pāpāmoa Beach Plaza is just 2-3 minute scoot away if you feel like grabbing a coffee or doing some quick shopping.

Katikati Urban Cycleways:
Once you get your hands on an off-road electric scooter like this beast of a machine here, you’ll be able to take it for a ride at the Katikati Urban Cycleways which offers plenty of on and off-road trails. Some of the trails here include the bird walk trail, summerset walkway/ cycleway, the Haiku Path to Henry Road and the path from Tamawhariua Reserve to Beach Road.
